The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported summoning the Russian chargé d’affaires Vladimir Ladanov to convey concern and unequivocal condemnation of the attack on the commercial vessel “MV Golden Leo” that took place on Sunday.

According to the ministry, there were five Indians on the ship, four of whom died.
“Such attacks harm the security and stability of international maritime trade,” the ministry statement said.
The Russian envoy was also asked to convey to Moscow “that targeting commercial shipping and the resulting loss of innocent civilian lives is unacceptable and must be avoided,” the statement added.
Ukraine’s naval forces said on Sunday that Russian missile strikes hit the “Golden Leo” – a Turkish-owned cargo ship flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau, carrying grain.
India is one of the largest suppliers of seafarers for commercial shipping worldwide; according to the country’s Ministry of Shipping, the number of active seafarers exceeded 320 thousand in 2025.
Russia and India consider each other “time-tested” friends, with ties dating back to the Soviet era, but their relationship has been under significant pressure since 2022, when Moscow launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
