The drama began more than a week ago when the now former mayor of Marijampolė, P. Isoda, heard an unfavorable decision from the Lithuanian Court of Appeal.

The lower instance, i.e. the Kaunas District Court decision, was favorable to P. Isoda, but the appellate court judges overturned everything: on July 9, the politician was found guilty of abuse of office, fraud, and forgery or handling of a forged document.
In addition to a 10,000 euro fine, P. Isoda was also banned from holding elected office for three years, and once the decision became final, his powers were recognized as terminated immediately.

The ruling Social Democrats intended to elect a new interim mayor of Marijampolė immediately and chose a replacement, but it turned out that the politician projected as an interim mayor also encountered problems with the Special Investigation Service (STT).
So additional political maneuvers were needed – one political sacrifice – so that the ruling party could appoint their third preferred politician as mayor, i.e. Vice Mayor Valdas Tumelis.
