This stage is considered one of the most important steps in modernizing the existing infrastructure and increasing railway traffic safety and efficiency in Lithuania.

According to Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas, traffic on roads is controlled by traffic lights and road signs, while on railways this function is performed by a signaling system that monitors and regulates train movement in real time, ensures a safe distance between rolling stock, and prevents collisions.
“We aim to integrate as quickly as possible into the European railway network, strengthen the transport infrastructure of our region, and increase its quality and capacity. The signaling of the railway line to Poland is a very important and long-awaited step that will increase traffic safety and, we hope, will ensure even more convenient and faster train journeys with neighboring countries in the near future,” says J. Taminskas.
Railway signaling includes train control, traffic control, signals, switches, and communication systems. The entire project consists of about 130 km of railway line, 10 stations, and 40 crossings.
“The implementation of this system in the strategic ‘Rail Baltica’ project is an important part of a broader railway modernization direction. The existing line will ensure automation of traffic management processes, increased rolling stock speed – this is a sustainable, long-term investment in modern and advanced railway infrastructure,” says Vytautas Radzevičius, Director of Strategy and Business Development at the LTG group.
The work is carried out by joint venture partners “AŽD Praha” s.r.o. (Czech Republic) and UAB “Fima” (Lithuania). The contract value is 111.1 million EUR.
“Upon project completion, signaling and related systems will be modernized, allowing for a higher level of traffic safety, more efficient train management, and real-time infrastructure and traffic monitoring. This will create conditions to increase the railway line capacity, improve punctuality, and ensure more reliable passenger and freight transport,” says Petr Žatecký, Foreign Trade Director of “AŽD Praha.”

“Together with our joint venture partner, we are proud to contribute to strengthening Lithuania’s and Europe’s transport connections and to shaping the future of the country’s railway infrastructure,” emphasizes Vytenis Pinaitis, CEO of “Fima.”
The European gauge section will be integrated into a unified traffic management and control system (EVKS), providing interoperability with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The implemented solutions will meet the highest safety standards, including SIL‑4 (Safety Integrity Level 4) safety integrity level – the highest safety class applied to railway signaling systems.
Currently, modernization works are also underway on the section from the Poland-Lithuania state border to Kaunas.
“Rail Baltica” is a strategic project of the LTG group, the European Union, and the largest railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic states, which will establish an electrified European standard railway connecting Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with Central and Western Europe, ensuring regional integration, civil and military mobility, and transport system resilience.
