„Axios“: US senators support the bill prepared by Graham – Russia will be hit

“It seems that the bill, which would impose 100% secondary tariffs on countries continuing to purchase Russian oil and gas, already has enough support to be passed in the Senate. The biggest obstacle now remains to bring the document to a plenary session for consideration,” the publication writes.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the document is currently supported by at least 61 senators: 39 Republicans and 22 Democrats.

On Thursday afternoon, the Republican Party leadership initiated the so-called “hotline” procedure – an informal survey of Republican senators to find out if there are any objections to bringing the bill to a vote.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is reluctant to fully endorse this bill but hinted that he is ready to sign it in honor of L. Graham.

“We are seriously considering this matter – it is being done in Lindsay’s honor. He pursued it more than anything else,” said the US leader.

As Axios adds, such a bill would increase pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, as it would allow the president to impose 100% tariffs on the five largest buyers of oil and gas from Russia.

“Secondary sanctions will be targeted at countries like China and India to cut off revenue streams that help finance Russia’s war in Ukraine,” the publication writes.

Additionally, the bill targets Russia’s “shadow fleet” – a network of tankers used to circumvent Western sanctions when exporting oil from Russia.
