The event coordinator in Šiauliai, video artist Augustė Tomkutė, is pleased that “Scanorama” has been successfully creating a long-standing dialogue between cinema and various art fields with the main cultural spaces of Šiauliai for many years.

Symbolically, the summer cinema holidays at the Šiauliai Art Gallery will begin with the Lithuanian film “Sand in Your Hair” and a meeting with its director Mantas Verbiejus and screenwriter Gediminas Cibulskis. An anthem to old age – this is how the creators describe the film. The founder of the “Scanorama” festival, Gražina Arlickaitė, emphasizes a deeper layer of the film: “This is a film not so much about late love as about human liberation. About the right to be human at any moment in life.”
The screenings at the gallery will continue with a journey to the harsh Iceland following the pastor Luke in director Hlynur Pálmason’s film “A White, White Day.” This film received the highest critical acclaim at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, earned the lead actor a European Film Award nomination, and was chosen as the audience favorite at “Scanorama.” After the film, documentary photographer Artūras Morozovas will talk about his travels and the “Unheard Stories of Strangers” he experienced during them.
On Wednesday, July 22, residents of Šiauliai and city guests are invited to the Photography Museum, where they will be awaited by the mysterious film “The Eternal Daughter” by director Joanna Hogg. It features not only the wonderful main characters created by actress Tilda Swinton but also a story full of mysticism and encounters with shadows of the past. After the film, psychotherapist Austėja Mikulavičienė will invite a discussion about the complexity of mother-daughter relationships.
Thursday’s film “Bergman Island” will take viewers to the Faroe Islands, where the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman lived and worked. This film will be shown in the independent art project space “Garage” located in the city’s industrial district.
On July 24, “Scanorama Summer” will return to the Šiauliai Art Gallery with the comedic drama “Another Round” by director Thomas Vinterberg, which won an Oscar and the highest honors from the European Film Academy for Best Film and Best Screenplay. Teachers at a Danish school are inspired by a philosopher’s theory that humans have a half-promille alcohol deficit in their blood from birth, and after drinking a certain amount of alcohol, thoughts open up, anxiety dissipates, and creativity bursts forth. Inspired by this idea, the teachers decide to start an experiment that ends in situations that provoke laughter through tears. After the film, toxicologist Evelina Podylinienė will analyze the effects of alcohol on brain function with the audience.
“Scanorama Summer” in Šiauliai will conclude with two screenings on July 25. At the Šiauliai Technical Creativity Center, the animated film for the whole family “Extraordinary Journey of Marona” by Romanian director Anca Damian will be shown, telling the story of the world from a dog’s perspective. The film’s heroine, the charming mixed-breed Marona, bonds with people but does not always receive the same devotion and love from them. After the screening, volunteer Simona Umaraite from the animal shelter “Šiaulių letenėlė” will invite viewers to create toys together and donate them to the dogs living in the shelter.
After the evening screening of director Mia Hansen-Løve’s film “One Fine Morning” at the Photography Museum, viewers are invited to join a romantic tour intertwined with the cinema history of Šiauliai city. The film “One Fine Morning” was recognized as the best film in the Cannes “Directors’ Fortnight” program, and the talented actress Léa Seydoux was nominated for Best Actress at the European Film Awards for this role. In this delicately French and Parisian romantic film, there is not a single artificial conflict – only people magically brought to life by the talented director’s hands.
