From the crime comedy “The Gentlemen” to Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” – the selection of series premiering in September is very diverse.

According to the BBC, among the most anticipated new releases are not only new seasons of well-known series but also several new stories that may surprise viewers.
1. “The Gentlemen”
In Guy Ritchie’s world, there is never too much crime. This will once again be evident in the second season of the popular series inspired by the 2019 director’s film of the same name.
Theo James returns as Eddie – the charming Duke of Halstead, who inherited the title, a huge estate, and a marijuana farm operating on its grounds. As the BBC notes, “Bridgerton” looks quite different here.
Eddie is now fully immersed in the criminal business run by Susie (Kaya Scodelario) and her father Bobby (Ray Winstone). Daniel Ings reprises his role as Eddie’s chaotic brother Freddy, and Joely Richardson plays their mother, Lady Sabrina.
Giancarlo Esposito portrays American drug dealer Stanley Johnson. As Bobby’s empire expands, the action moves from the United Kingdom to Italy, where Sergio Castellitto plays the Italian crime boss.
Joining the cast is also Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Hawthorne. The BBC jokes that this character will likely be much darker than Bonneville’s Lord Grantham from “Downton Abbey.”
In Lithuania, the second season of “The Gentlemen” will premiere on September 3 on Netflix. Netflix has officially confirmed that the second season will start on September 3.
2. “Last Seen”
Patrick Brammall will appear this month in two very different series. From the comedy “Colin From Accounts,” he moves to the drama and suspense-filled thriller “Last Seen,” created and filmed in Victoria, Australia.
Brammall plays Ian Ridley – a police dispatcher and former detective whose three-year-old daughter was abducted 11 years ago. Her traces have never been found. During that time, Ian’s marriage fell apart, and he sank into alcoholism.
When he receives an urgent call for help from a young woman he believes to be his daughter, Ian is determined to find her, even if no one else believes him.
The series also stars Maxine Peake. The BBC describes her role as sensitive and emphasizes that viewers will follow not only Ian’s search for clues but also how their discovery will affect his already complicated life.
In Lithuania, “Last Seen” premieres on September 9 on Apple TV.
3. “Colin From Accounts”
The third season will be the last for the romantic comedy set in Sydney. The series began with the story of Gordon, a brewery owner, and Ashley, a medical student.
They are played by Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer – a real-life couple who co-created and wrote the series.
In the second season, Ashley rejected Gordon’s public marriage proposal at a friend’s wedding. The new story begins three years later when they unexpectedly meet again.
The question of whether they will be together again becomes the main focus of the story, but this time everything will have an end.
“We don’t want to beat a dead horse,” Brammall explained the decision to end the series to The Guardian.
Dyer added with her characteristic dry humor: “It’s not that the horse is already dead – we just don’t want to find out that it’s struggling to breathe.”
4. “Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence”
Can Agatha Christie’s detective stories survive being moved from the usual English manors and parsonages of the 1930s and 1940s to the modern world?
The BBC answers confidently – yes. This is a contemporary version of her stories and novels featuring the detective duo Tommy and Tuppence.
Tommy (Josh Dylan) here is a writer of detective stories who unexpectedly meets his former university friend Tuppence (Antonia Thomas) at a friend’s wedding.
Of course, a murder soon occurs. They take on the investigation, and thus a new detective agency is born.
However, their mutual attraction becomes a problem: Tuppence is married, and Tommy soon starts flirting with a charming and helpful detective (Callie Cooke).
Imelda Staunton plays Tommy’s aunt Ada, who narrates the story with dry humor.
A. Christie wrote five books about Tommy and Tuppence, and their story spanned from 1922 to 1973. The BBC asks – why not let these characters cross into the 21st century?
5. “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story”
The fourth part of Ryan Murphy’s anthology “Monster” tells the story of one of the most famous killers in American history – Lizzie Borden.
In 1892, L. Borden was accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe but was never convicted. Her story became so famous that it inspired a well-known English nursery rhyme about Lizzie Borden and her axe.
Lizzie is played by Ella Beatty, daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. In photos released by Netflix, the actress is seen with a blood-splattered face.
Vicky Krieps plays the Borden household maid, Billie Lourd plays Lizzie’s sister, and Rebecca Hall and Charlie Hunnam play her unfortunate parents. Hunnam played serial killer Ed Gein in a previous “Monster” season.

W. Beatty herself has said that this season features the first “female monster” in the anthology, and the story explores women’s rage and repression.
Because of this, the series’ narrative will also delve into the stories of other real female killers. Sarah Paulson will play Aileen Wuornos – a serial killer portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2003 film “Monster.”
“Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” premieres on September 17 on Netflix.
6. “Slow Horses”
In the latest season of “Slow Horses,” previously called one of the best TV spy series by the BBC, someone is systematically killing former MI5 agents who once worked at Slough House.
They are called “his Joes” by Jackson Lamb – an incredibly smart but constantly messy character played by Gary Oldman.
River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) suspects his father, a hired killer (Hugo Weaving), but there is more than one possible suspect. Meanwhile, MI5 chief Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) faces more pressure than ever before.
Since the whole team is targeted, many “Slow Horses” agents have to hide together. And, as one might expect, it doesn’t end well.
Saskia Reeves returns as Catherine, Christopher Chung as Roddy, and Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Shirley.
The BBC admits that the previous season was not the best – it unintentionally made one wonder how the incompetent Roddy managed to become a spy, even if he is a computer genius.
However, according to the BBC, the new season returns with full force – with dry humor, action scenes, and impeccable acting.
“Slow Horses” premieres on September 16 on Apple TV.
7. “Brothers”
There is a real rumor sparked by a hint from Matthew McConaughey’s mother: that he and his friend Woody Harrelson are actually half-brothers – their fathers might have had a brief romance.
The “True Detective” stars turned this story into the basis for a new, much more fictional meta-comedy.
In the series, they play fictional versions of themselves, while other actors portray fictional family members. The story involves Woody, his wife, and two daughters visiting Matthew, his wife, and three children in Texas.
Holland Taylor plays the straightforward, heavy-drinking mother of Matthew, whom everyone calls Ma Mac. She is the one who hints to Woody about their possible kinship.
The series playfully references reality at times. For example, the fictional Matthew decides to run for Texas governor. Similar speculations have been made about the real M. McConaughey, but he has so far decided not to run.
The BBC notes that the series overall combines Woody’s absurd humor with Matthew’s more serious emotional storyline – which suits both actors very well.
“Brothers” premieres on September 23 on Apple TV.
8. “American Horror Story”
Ryan Murphy has already created 12 seasons of the horror anthology, but the 13th has special significance for superstitious viewers – both because of the number and the cast.
This time, many stars from previous seasons return in one story, some reprising their old characters.
Among the most notable returns are Jessica Lange, who will play all four of her previous characters, and Sarah Paulson, who will portray six. Also returning are Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, and Billie Lourd.
R. Murphy compared the season to “The Avengers”: “They all come together to defeat ultimate evil.”
The BBC points out that the 14th season is already in production, so it’s clear that the horror “Avengers” will have to face more Ryan Murphy projects.
In Lithuania, the 13th season of “American Horror Story” will premiere on September 25 on Disney+.
9. “A Different World”
This dramedy is not a remake – it is a continuation of the series “A Different World,” which itself was a spin-off of “The Cosby Show” and aired from 1987 to 1993.
The creators of the new series decided that enough time has passed to return to the story without associating it with Bill Cosby’s sexual assault scandal. Moreover, the previous series quickly moved away from the Huxtable family, who were central to “The Cosby Show.”
As in the original story, the action takes place at the fictional Hillman College, but now the focus is mainly on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of characters from the previous series.
There will be plenty of nostalgia – original series actresses Jasmine Guy and Jada Pinkett Smith will appear in cameo roles.
At the time, “A Different World” was important for its focus on historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), as well as topics such as race, social class, and sex.
The new series producer Felicia Pride said that it was also important for her team to listen to today’s young black people – to understand “what they need, what they face, and what they experience,” while maintaining the original themes: love, family relationships, and heart.
“A Different World” premieres on September 24 on Netflix.
