Want to restore peace? Maybe it’s time to tidy up your outdoor space. Here are five things in your yard that might annoy neighbors, writes the portal “Real Simple.”

Overflowing trash and recycling bins

According to Wendy Zanders, a professional organizer and decluttering specialist, overflowing trash and recycling bins definitely won’t help you get an invitation to a neighbors’ party.

Although it may seem trivial, constantly overflowing bins become a serious problem, especially in warmer months when they can emit odors or attract pests.

“Working with clients, I often see that bins are full after just the first cleaning session,” she says. “Sometimes they just miss trash pickup day or it’s still a few days away, and meanwhile, we keep adding more…

If pickup day is not soon, I help clients break down the bins and flatten cardboard as much as possible so it can be stored in the garage or hidden behind the bin. And we compress the trash so the lids close fully, and place the bins in an unseen spot, behind the gates.”

To avoid this in the future, W. Zanders advises keeping bins behind privacy screens, in a side yard, or in a small storage shed.

Unused or broken furniture

Many of us have outdoor furniture, such as dining tables or loungers, which we use for family, and sometimes bring out extra folding chairs for guests. But if you don’t put them away after gatherings, they quickly become an eyesore to neighbors.

We also often leave old or broken furniture outside that we plan to throw away but don’t do so in time.

“Working with clients, I often see broken or unused furniture left outside,” the expert says. “They should be kept in the garage until given away through local Facebook groups, donated, or taken out as bulky waste. The goal is to remove them from visible areas as quickly as possible so there is no visual clutter in front of the house.”

Too bright lighting

Whether it’s festive garlands or wall-mounted fixtures, overly bright outdoor lighting illuminates not only your yard but also neighbors’ spaces.

Although it may seem harmless, such lights can disturb privacy, peace, and even wake people at night. Therefore, it’s worth turning off lights when you go indoors or choosing dimmer bulbs.

Poorly maintained landscaping

We are all busy, but forgetting to trim hedges or prune trees can really annoy neighbors.

Overgrown vegetation or leaves falling from trees should not become a neighbor’s problem – it’s your responsibility.

Dog poop

You may not have noticed that your dog did its business in the yard. Although it may seem like no problem – after all, it’s your yard – neighbors might not be such big dog lovers.

It’s not only unpleasant and can emit odors, but it also attracts rats, which no one wants in their yard. So try to clean up the yard as quickly as possible.
