Comedy series such as “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building,” dramas “Slow Horses” and “The Pitt,” as well as limited series including “DTF St. Louis,” are competing for the most important awards of the evening.
Everything looks perfect on screen: during the broadcast, we see the stars and their seats in the hall. But as soon as the cameras switch to a commercial break, celebrities can suddenly get up from their seats – and then the seat fillers get to work.
Their task is to quietly occupy empty chairs so that when the broadcast returns to the hall, it looks full. Sounds interesting, right? However, according to a woman who worked as a seat filler at the 2024 Emmy Awards, the job is not just about stars and cameras.
I have been registered on “Seatfillersandmore.com” for about a year and a half. I apply for every event (I live in Los Angeles), and participants are selected by lottery. I was selected for this event about a week in advance.
I sat next to Stephen Colbert and right behind Brie Larson, chatted a bit with both! I also sat very close to the actors from “The Bear” and “Shogun.” I was about the sixth row from the stage.
Naturally, many people were curious about what a seat filler actually sees while we watch the Emmy ceremony comfortably at home. The Reddit user also shared the most unpleasant part of this job.

However, the woman assured that overall it was quite a good job.
I actually had a lot of fun,” she admitted. “I just really enjoyed sitting where I was. The celebrity conversations happening around were incredibly interesting.
Reddit users quickly flooded the post comments and asked the anonymous woman questions about her experience. Probably the most common question was what exactly happens during commercial breaks.
The woman explained: “Everyone would stand up, chat with each other, and order drinks. Almost every commercial break Brie L. would go find friends and talk with them.”
Several times staff tried to seat another seat filler in her place, thinking she had left, although she was actually just one or two rows away chatting with others.
Many Reddit users also asked what happens to winners when they receive their awards.
The Emmy ceremony participant explained that winners “leave” for a while and then return to their seats.
Two rows behind me sat Liza Colón-Zayas (Tina from “The Bear”), and after some time, when she was not in her seat, she returned holding her award on her lap,” she recounted.
