„We sleep as if by the highway“: famous writer complains about noise from restaurants

M. Ivaškevičius described on Facebook the inconveniences he allegedly faces living on Vilniaus Street. He stated that although the building looks tidy from the Vilniaus Street side, the inner courtyard, shared by nearby residents and the restaurants operating there, has, according to him, become an “industrial zone.”

“A cheap restaurant chain has settled in the neighboring building. From the front side facing the street, everything is beautiful and clean, but in the inner courtyard, which we share because the buildings are joined at the corner, it is a complete industrial zone,” M. Ivaškevičius wrote on social media.

According to him, several powerful air conditioners operate around the clock in the inner courtyard, whose noise at night resembles living near a highway. Another problem, he said, is the minibuses and trucks arriving early in the morning to the courtyard, delivering goods to the restaurants.

“At least turn off the air conditioners,” he said he asked the building administration, but according to him, he was told to file official complaints.

Under the post, more people shared similar experiences – some said they face similar problems, while others argued that active city life is inevitable when living in the old town.

Although M. Ivaškevičius did not reveal to 15min which restaurants disturb the residents’ rest, he hinted that the restaurants operating at Vilniaus St. 18 cause problems.

Several restaurants are located at this address – “Bonocosì,” “Etno dvaras,” “Pusryčių klubas,” and “Meating Room.” Suppliers delivering products needed for the restaurants arrive in the inner courtyard, and part of the infrastructure used for their operations is installed there.

15min interviewed representatives of these restaurants and the Vilnius city municipality about their views on the old town residents’ complaints.
