Thousands of species of bacteria invisible to the naked eye live in the Baltic Sea. Most of them are an important part of the ecosystem – they break down organic matter that enters the water, participate in nutrient cycling, and help maintain ecosystem functioning. However, among them are some that under certain conditions can pose a threat to human or animal health.

One such group of bacteria is Vibrio. Marija Kataržytė, senior researcher at the Marine Research Institute of Klaipėda University, says that more than 150 species of this genus are known worldwide, and about one-tenth of them are considered potentially pathogenic to humans, fish, and other animals.
