At the end of August, Russia began a week-long series of night and day attacks on Kyiv — the heaviest continuous bombardment of the Ukrainian capital since Russia’s large-scale invasion began more than four years ago. According to Ukrainian officials, the continuous missile and drone strikes continue this month as well, aiming to break the public spirit.

International economic sanctions on Russia and efforts to diplomatically isolate Moscow have not stopped the invasion. V. Zelensky urged countries to increase pressure.
“Unfortunately, the international community’s response to these strikes, which take lives almost every day, has been too little,” he said on social media.
“However, a response is necessary — Moscow must not enter winter thinking it can get away with missile and drone terror without consequences,” the president emphasized.
According to the United Nations (UN), in July, more Ukrainian civilians were killed or injured due to intensified Russian air attacks than in any month since March 2022: 437 civilians were killed, and more than 2,600 were injured.
According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, since the start of the Russian invasion, more than 16,800 Ukrainian civilians have died, and more than 51,000 have been injured.
The US renewed efforts to end the fighting, sending special envoys to Kyiv and Moscow over the weekend, although Washington’s efforts have so far yielded no significant progress. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said late Tuesday that the Ukraine-Russia talks were productive but much remains to be done.
Kyiv residents try to recover after drone strike
On the night leading into Wednesday, Russian air attacks claimed at least two lives, and seven more people were injured, Ukrainian officials reported. Moscow attacked six Ukrainian regions with drones and ballistic and cruise missiles.
Four of the injured were in a 22-story residential building in Kyiv’s Darnytsia district, where a drone damaged the 11th floor and caused a fire on the 12th floor, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service said.
62-year-old Olha Smal, living on the 12th floor, said the blast wave threw her across the kitchen. A fire broke out in one of her bedrooms, and the apartment quickly filled with smoke, she said. Her pregnant neighbor was injured.

“You live day by day. You don’t know what will happen to you tomorrow or even today,” O. Smal told The Associated Press. “It’s very, very hard.”
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces struck a drone factory warehouse in Kyiv.
It also said it hit fuel tanks and an electrical facility in the port city of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine.
According to the ministry, the Russian military also struck a ship heading to Odesa with military cargo and logistics facilities at the Starokozache border checkpoint with Moldova. Two civilians were killed in the border strike, Ukrainian officials reported.
Ukraine claims to have struck Russian naval base
V. Zelensky said Ukraine responds to Russian strikes with daily long-range attacks on infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.
According to him, the latest Ukrainian strikes targeted Novorossiysk — a port on the Black Sea in Russia’s Krasnodar region. V. Zelensky said the strikes hit the naval base, including a terminal used for oil loading, military port facilities, and warships with cruise missiles.
The Novorossiysk naval base is an important center for the Russian Black Sea Fleet, where ships are maintained and receive logistical support, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said.
Krasnodar region governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that four people died in a drone attack in Novorossiysk.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, air defense shot down 596 Ukrainian drones.
