„The sooner we announce the competition, without waiting,“ said VAATC director Marius Švaikauskas on Monday at the Seimas Environmental Protection Committee.

According to him, VAATC can sort waste with mobile devices.
„We will rent devices, involve other waste managers if needed. We will also involve other contractors, (…) their capabilities are being evaluated,“ said the VAATC head.
According to M. Švaikauskas, part of the waste is currently transported to the Kazokiškės landfill: „This is an exceptional and temporary measure and we have the goal to end it as soon as possible“.
Marius Urvakis, deputy mayor of Elektrėnai, where the Kazokiškės landfill operates, says that waste collected in the Vilnius region should be sorted at waste management centers in other regions.

„In the opinion of the Elektrėnai municipality, no other municipality can make decisions for another municipality and try to solve its own municipality’s problem at the expense of the residents of another municipality. Other regional waste management centers, other infrastructure should be used, and the waste management hierarchy should be followed, with landfill disposal being the last resort,“ said the deputy mayor.
The Elektrėnai municipality declared an emergency situation due to air pollution at the end of March.
