US diplomat surprised: about Greenland – you misunderstood Trump

Having started his second term, D. Trump repeatedly raised the idea of annexing Greenland, not ruling out the possibility of using military force, which caused horror in Europe. However, A. Puzderis assured that the president’s statements were useful in drawing attention to Greenland’s strategic importance, but they should not be taken seriously.

A. Puzderis, a former restaurant owner, compared the stormy reaction of the European community to a popular coffee drink.

“You buy cappuccino for the coffee, not for the foam. So let’s focus on the coffee, not the foam. And most of it is foam,” the diplomat used a strange analogy.

According to him, the European side understood D. Trump’s words as if Washington was directly threatening the island’s territorial integrity, although “the president never said we were going to invade”.

A. Puzderis’s speech came a day after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called Greenland part of Denmark – but with the ambiguous remark “for now”.

Such words from the US ambassador to the European Union came as a surprise, as D. Trump had caused a real storm with his ambitions to take control of this Arctic island.

He himself had previously said that Washington should take over Greenland for security reasons.

In early 2026, the US even announced tariffs on eight European countries that opposed such American rhetoric, but later abandoned the penalties due to the collapse of global markets.

Journalists also found out that the United States is conducting secret negotiations for new bases in Greenland, aiming to expand its military presence in the region. Washington seeks to open three new facilities in the territory that would monitor Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic.

At the same time, the island’s Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen clearly defined “red lines,” confirming that Greenland cannot be sold, annexed, or seized.
