On September 10, the amendments to the Courts Act registered by J. Olekas provide that a person can be appointed to the position of judge up to the age of 70 instead of the current 65.
The draft also provides that the law’s provision will apply to persons who have not yet reached 65 years of age on the proposed effective date of the law, i.e., January 1, 2027.
However, a safeguard is also provided – for judges who retire by December 31, this would no longer apply, as the amendments state: “This law does not restore the powers of a judge that ended before its entry into force.”
According to the National Courts Administration, during the remaining more than three months of this year, 13 judges will turn 65, and next year – 26.

Most judges who are about to lose their powers due to age are at the Klaipėda District Court in Klaipėda and the Regional Administrative Court in Kaunas – 4 each, and there are 3 such judges at the Kaunas District Court in Kaunas.
However, J. Olekas did not coordinate the initiative with the Judicial Council or other interested institutions.
So both among lawyers and in the corridors of the Seimas, speculation began about who the real initiator of this idea is and for which specific persons it would be relevant.
