The ship’s captain, Yalchin Shahin, whose ship was identified by the Turkish agency as “Nadezhda,” stated that the cargo ship was attacked by six or seven Ukrainian drones.
According to him, due to the drone threat, Russian Navy ships could not approach the ship to provide assistance while the crew tried to extinguish the fire.
The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the Turkish Ministry of Transport confirmed that the ship in question is “Nadezhda” with 22 crew members.

Based on public databases, the attacked ship sails under the flag of Cameroon and operates regular trips between Samsun and Novorossiysk.
The Turkish Ministry of Maritime Affairs provided data that somewhat differs from the information of the “Ihlas Haber Ajansi” agency: according to them, “Nadezhda” was sailing from Novorossiysk to Samsun, not the other way around, and the strike occurred about 37 km from the Russian port.
The 119 m long ship, designed to carry cars, trucks, and containers, was launched in Denmark in 1978. At that time, it was called “Amazon.” The ship “Nadezhda” is accused by Ukraine of transporting grain from the occupied Berdyansk, Kerch, and Sevastopol, and sanctions were applied to it in November 2025.

Condemned the strikes
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the ships were attacked late Monday after departing from the Russian port of Novorossiysk, and several employees were injured. It added that “their condition is being closely monitored.”
“We are very concerned about the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, which, despite many of our warnings, affects civilian shipping,” the ministry said.
