A month later, it became clear how the accident happened.
J. Roney had previously been an assistant swimming coach for the University of North Carolina’s swimming team.
On that black day, the swimming specialist himself was at the pool with his wife Manresa. The 39-year-old American was doing diving and breathing exercises underwater.
He would surface after two minutes to breathe, then dive down again.
During such training, his wife left the pool for a phone call.
When she returned after five minutes, J. Roney was lying unconscious in the water, the “Daily Mail” wrote.
“The wife told doctors that her husband was a swimming enthusiast and that that evening he was doing breathing exercises, holding his breath underwater.

She pulled her husband out of the water and called an ambulance, and she herself started resuscitation exercises,” the autopsy report stated.
The investigation found no suspicion of possible suicide, intoxication, or crime.
J. Roney was taken to the hospital, but death was already confirmed there.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with the Roney family during this difficult time. His efforts for the university program and our community will be remembered,” said the University of North Carolina swimming and diving team statement.
J. Roney previously held the university record in the 200m breaststroke. He worked with the university swimming team from 2014 to 2016.

After his death, his wife and five children continue their lives.
Funds are now being raised for the family through a donation fund.
