Participants in the march held in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, waved rainbow-colored flags and held posters with inscriptions “More love, less hate,” “A better life without Nazis,” and “Potatoes are also of foreign origin.”

The march was organized by a coalition of groups called “Saxony-Anhalt: open to the world.”
The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD), which is anti-immigrant, pro-Russian, and favorable to Donald Trump, is leading in public opinion polls ahead of the elections in Saxony-Anhalt and is expected to win the most votes in this small state with a population of 2.1 million.
This would be the AfD’s first victory in regional elections, marking an unprecedented far-right breakthrough in post-war Germany.

However, it is unclear whether the party will secure an absolute majority that would allow it to govern alone.
All other parties so far reject the possibility of governing together with the AfD, except for the pro-Russian left-wing party BSW, whose members do not have a unified opinion on this issue.
