„Vytautas Kazimieras Urbas was one of those Lithuanian officers who built the defense of the restored independent state from the ground up,“ said the head of state in condolences to the deceased’s relatives, friends, comrades, the Naval Forces, and the entire Lithuanian army.
„His professionalism, responsibility, and dedication to Lithuania significantly contributed to the creation and strengthening of our Naval Forces. His service to the state will remain an important part of the history of the Lithuanian army,“ said G. Nausėda.
As BNS wrote, V. K. Urbas died on Thursday at the age of 83.
He was born in 1944 in the village of Daglienai in the Pasvalys district, in a farming family. In 1949, together with his entire family, he was deported to Siberia for nine years. In 1970, after graduating from the Petrodvorets Higher Naval Electronics School, he served for seven years in the Soviet Northern Fleet.
After retiring, he worked at a research institute in Leningrad, where he designed warships.

In 1989, V. K. Urbas was elected deputy chairman of the Lithuanian Society in Leningrad, but soon returned to Lithuania. After the re-establishment of the Lithuanian army, from June 1991 until his retirement in April 1999, he served in the Lithuanian army and helped create the Naval Forces.
For his merits to Lithuania and the national defense system, V. K. Urbas was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Cross of Vytis, the 3rd Class Medal of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas, and the Ministry of National Defense’s honorary badge “For Merits to National Defense”.
