The Nida Lighthouse Building Complex Transferred to Neringa Municipality

It was already considered a huge achievement that in 2023 these complex buildings were removed from the list of objects for sale by the State Enterprise “Property Bank” and preserved from privatization by transferring them to the Lithuanian National Museum of Art under trust. However, the main goal of the Neringa municipality was to take this historic heritage into the hands of the community itself. The signed act, based on a previously adopted resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, officially confirmed this aim.

The real estate transferred to the jurisdiction of the Neringa municipality, with a total residual value of over 228 thousand euros (228,010.46 Eur), consists of six objects. These are buildings located at Švyturio St. 1 and Švyturio St. 2A: an administrative building, two production buildings, two utility buildings, and engineering yard structures, including the famous Nida well.

The mayor of Neringa municipality, Darius Jasaitis, emphasizes that the signing of this document opens new opportunities for Neringa.

“The Nida Lighthouse and its surroundings are an integral part of the Curonian Spit landscape and the story about this region, recalling the daily life of the lighthouse keepers, maritime history, and the human relationship with the sea. Today, as the buildings have finally passed to the community, we can confidently talk about the full activation of this space. We thank everyone who has been on this long journey, helping to preserve the integrity of the building complex, as well as the Lithuanian National Museum of Art for cooperation,” says Neringa mayor Darius Jasaitis.

From heritage takeover to concrete activation works

Long before the official transfer of the property, the Neringa municipality began preparing for the future activation of the buildings. At the initiative of the municipality, applied studies of the Nida Lighthouse building complex have already started and will soon be completed, covering architectural natural, structural, historical, engineering (geological), masonry moisture and contamination, and wood studies.

These studies are necessary to accurately adjust the valuable properties of the object and begin design work. In parallel with the studies, the process of forming the complex’s land plot has already started.

The final transfer of the property to the ownership of the Neringa municipality ensures the implementation of independent functions, guaranteeing that the marine heritage of the Curonian Spit will not only be protected for future generations but also directly created and nurtured by the local community.
