At the Kaunas City Municipality Council meeting held on July 14, the most discussion arose when approving the new prices for services provided by the public institution “Kaunas IN”.
The list of services also included a yet-to-be-built observation wheel.
The draft decision submitted for council approval stated that a ride on the observation wheel for a person aged 16 and over will cost 12 euros, for children aged 4-15, students, seniors, and persons with disabilities – 8 euros, and for a family of 4 or 5 people – 35-39 euros.
For 1-2 people ordering a VIP cabin with a glass of sparkling wine, the cost will be 50 euros.
A discount system is proposed for legal entities and organized groups.
“The observation wheel will contribute to increasing the city’s attractiveness, improving visitors’ experience, and activating the local economy. International practice shows that the continuity and competitiveness of such facilities are directly related to economically justified pricing, which ensures infrastructure maintenance, safe operation, quality service, and continuous service improvement. For this reason, it is necessary to set competitive pricing for providing observation wheel services.
The proposed prices were determined after analyzing the pricing of similar observation wheels and tourist attractions in Lithuania and abroad. When evaluating the price levels, market prices, operating costs of the facility, planned visitor flows, principles of service accessibility, and long-term sustainability goals were taken into account,” the explanatory note to the draft decision states.

Still unclear where it will stand
Some council members in the opposition raised questions about this draft decision.
According to Audronė Jankuvienė, a representative of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, a rather paradoxical situation has arisen where the prices for the observation wheel services are already being approved, it is supposed to start operating in the fall, but it is still unknown where the wheel will stand in Kaunas.
