Social media users shared this online, even creating certain terms that emerged after TikTok content creator Jules posted a question: “Does anyone else’s pubic hair hurt when it grows too long? The feeling is like what you get after wearing your hair tied in a ponytail all day and then letting it down, but in this case, it feels like stabbing.”

This quickly became popular – the video has already been viewed 6.9 million times, and commentators call this term “devilish but, unfortunately, accurate,” according to Metro.
Thousands of people also reported experiencing unpleasant sensations – they claim that naturally left pubic hair causes “itching” or “irritation.” Why can pubic hair cause pain? “Very long pubic hair can cause discomfort because it is coarse and curly,” said Dr. Nikki Ramskill, founder of The Female Health Doctor Clinic, to Metro.
“Then it can fold, pull the skin, or catch on clothes and underwear. Constant pulling can cause sharp, irritating pain – similar to what we feel when hair is suddenly tugged.”
Dr. N. Ramskill adds: “When hair is pulled or bent, the tiny nerves around each hair follicle get irritated – this is what causes pain or sensitivity.” Since 32% of Brits choose minimal pubic hair care, it is likely you are not the only ones experiencing such discomfort. What else can cause pain in the pubic hair area?
According to the doctor, not only shaving but also long-term hair removal increases the risk of ingrown hairs. “They can become painful, pus-filled, and even cause infection,” says Dr. N. Ramskill representing Doctify. “This happens when long hairs fold and grow back into the skin, causing red and painful bumps.”

When pubic hair is very long, it can cause friction and irritation – as hair rubs against the skin or clothes, especially during sports. “During sexual intercourse, hair can even be pulled or tugged; this can cause pain if pubic hair gets caught somewhere,” explains Dr. N. Ramskill.
Although this problem may seem superficial, the doctor also notes that overly thick hair “can trap sweat, bacteria, and secretions, so the area may lose its feeling of freshness.” How to avoid this discomfort? The simplest solution is to trim pubic hair enough so that you feel no discomfort.
“However, pubic hair itself is not harmful to health – on the contrary, it serves a protective function: it reduces friction and forms a barrier against bacteria,” says the doctor. 46% of women prefer trimmed pubic hair – this is the most popular choice among both women and men, while only 23% of women want to be completely shaved.
Dr. N. Ramskill adds: “Whether a person decides to trim, remove, or leave pubic hair is a personal choice, but if discomfort arises, trimming the hair can help solve the problem.”
