The Lithuanian swimming quartet that fought valiantly – 4th place at the European Championship

The swimming program included new mixed relay finals of 4×200 m freestyle with Danas Rapšys, Tomas Navikonis, Sylvia Statkevičius, and Ieva Jurkūnaitė completing the distance in lane five in 7 min. 28.05 sec. and finishing 4th.

The first to jump into the pool, D. Rapšys, handed the relay to T. Navikonis in sixth place.

The second member of the Lithuanian team lifted his team to a prize-winning – third – place, but while S. Statkevičius was swimming, the team slipped to 4th position.

In the last part of the relay, I. Jurkūnaitė managed to bring the team back into the top three, but ultimately had to settle for 4th place.

The European champion was the Great Britain team (Jack McMillan, Matthew Richards, Freya Colbert, Freya Anderson), finishing in 7 min. 24.13 sec.

Second to finish was the German team (Lukas Martens, Jarno Baschnitt, Linda Roth, Maya Tobehn; 7 min. 25.43 sec.), and third – the neutral athletes team (Grigorijus Vekoviščevas, Ivan Girev, Darija Klepikova, and Ksenija Mišarina; 7 min. 26.35 sec.).

So far, in the history of the European Championships, Lithuanians have won only one medal in team competitions, in 2024 in Belgrade, when in the 4×200 m freestyle relay D. Rapšys, T. Navikonis, Kristupas Trepočka, and Tomas Lukminas won gold. However, in those Olympic years in Serbia, the strongest swimmers were missing.

In the mixed relay qualifying heats on Saturday morning, Lithuania was represented by K. Trepočka and Tajus Juška along with S. Statkevičius and I. Jurkūnaitė. In the first qualifying heat, the Lithuanians completed the distance in 7 min. 31.97 sec., took 1st place, and confidently advanced to the final.
