In 2024, M. Balčiūnas, elected president in the presidential elections, announced his resignation, which will take effect on Monday, today in the afternoon on his personal Facebook page.

The ALK president stated that he will hand over his duties to the senior vice president, although such an action is not provided for in the ALK statutes.
The association’s secretary general Dominykas Domarkas revealed to 15min that the position will be offered to the long-time president of the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL), Remigijus Milašius.
“This provision is not formalized in the statutes. The senior member of the executive committee is Remigijus Milašius. I think that on Monday Mindaugas will meet with him and hand over the duties of the acting president,” D. Domarkas told 15min.
However, R. Milašius, speaking to “Delfi,” revealed that he has not yet received any offer to take over the leadership of ALK.
“No one has offered me anything,” LKL president told journalist Povilas Baranauskas. “Maybe they have decided internally, but I cannot answer for them. I have not been specifically told that we want to hand over the [acting leader] duties to you.”

R. Milašius also doubted the possibility of holding both the LKL and ALK president positions at the same time.
“In my opinion, you cannot be both,” said the businessman who has been leading the country’s basketball league since 2013.

“Another thing is, do I need it? I don’t know. There are only two words – for the sake of Lithuania. Understand correctly. Otherwise, I am not interested in such things,” said R. Milašius.

There are seven vice presidents in ALK in total: Remigijus Milašius, Šarūnas Kliokys, Rolandas Skaisgirys, Rimantas Cibauskas, Alina Adomaitytė, Tomas Pačėsas, and Gedvydas Vainauskas.
It is the latter, i.e., G. Vainauskas, who is the senior among them and according to ALK statutes would take over the leadership of the Strategic Management Council (SVT) from M. Balčiūnas if needed. The SVT consists of the ALK president and all vice presidents.
Now “Delfi” reported that G. Vainauskas agrees to take over the duties of the acting ALK president.

It is worth recalling that the owner of the newspaper of the same name, who led the then Vilnius “Lietuvos rytas” for two decades, left the capital’s club in 2017 after a scandal when he made racist remarks about “Lietuvos rytas” foreigners on television.
According to D. Domarkas, more details about ALK’s future should become clear next Thursday during the Executive Committee meeting, when a decision will also be made regarding early ALK presidential elections.
