V. Zelensky stated on the social network “X” that during a two-day visit to Belgrade he will meet with his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vučić.

“We will discuss the development of economic ties between our countries, relations with the European Union (EU), other areas that may be beneficial to our nations, and security issues,” V. Zelensky wrote.

With Serbia being historically close to Russia, A. Vučić refused to impose sanctions on Moscow, although this step angered the EU and slowed Belgrade’s path to joining the bloc.

One high-ranking Ukrainian official told AFP on the eve of the visit that this is an attempt to “distract the Serbs from Russia’s side,” but A. Vučić continues to firmly hold his decision not to impose sanctions on Moscow.

“I am confident that Volodymyr Zelensky, considering his fight and views, will express his opinion on sanctions against the Russian Federation, but the Republic of Serbia set its position four and a half years ago, almost five years ago, and has not changed it since,” A. Vučić told the media on Thursday.

“It will remain so until otherwise notified,” he added.

V. Zelensky, who has traveled most of the world seeking to rally support for Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion, had not visited Serbia since becoming president in 2019.

Although A. Vučić is highly dependent on cheap Russian gas and is one of the few European leaders who still visits Moscow, he has also provided non-military aid to Kyiv.

The Kremlin has accused A. Vučić of selling ammunition to Ukraine, but he has denied this multiple times.
