Generations have grown up with the ‘Looney Tunes’ characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester the Cat, and others – it’s hard to believe, but they have been delighting audiences for almost 100 years. And in this company, there’s also Wile E. Coyote, who has unsuccessfully tried to catch the Road Runner countless times…
It was Coyote’s failures that inspired writer Ian Frazier. In 1990, his humorous piece appeared in ‘The New Yorker’ magazine, telling how Coyote sues the ‘Acme’ corporation for allegedly producing defective products – products that Coyote uses to try and catch the Road Runner, but not only fails to achieve his goal but also gets hurt himself.
After some time, it was decided that a film could be born from the aforementioned work. The famous producer James Gunn took on the implementation of the idea, and in 2018, it was announced that Warner Bros. was preparing a film titled ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ – which was also the name of I. Frazier’s highly acclaimed work.
Soon, the studio appointed Dave Green as the film’s director. A rather interesting cast was assembled: it was revealed that Will Forte would portray Coyote’s lawyer, and John Cena would play Acme’s defender. Lana Condor also joined the film, and, of course, a host of ‘Looney Tunes’ characters – as it is a live-action animation hybrid.
The film was shot in 2022 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After filming, other tasks awaited, such as incorporating animation. The creative team stated that Robert Zemeckis’ acclaimed 1988 film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ became an excellent example of how to create interaction between live actors and animated characters.
Finally, the film was completed and awaited its release date, which was scheduled for July 2023. However, what happened soon after became a real nightmare for the film’s team and its eagerly awaiting ‘Looney Tunes’ fans…
