Taiwan opposition leader says she wants deeper trust from the US

Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Gomindano (KMT) party, said at a press conference that she hopes her party can play a key role in regional peace efforts and “gain deeper trust from the US.”

This also happened after the KMT recently thwarted the Taiwan government’s plan to spend nearly $40 billion (34 billion euros) on key weapons, including American arms and locally produced drones.

“Only the KMT is truly serious and responsible in taking the most important role in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” said the opposition representative.

Cheng Li-wun shook up Taiwan’s politics since her unexpected rise to the party’s top last year and has faced criticism for being seen as too favorable to China.

The KMT has long advocated for closer ties with China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and threatens to use force to take it.

However, the opposition leader’s rhetoric about both sides of the strait has crossed the comfort zone of many of her own party members and caused concern among foreign partners, including Washington.
