Local officials in Ceuta had asked the central government in Madrid for reinforcements to control the border crisis that erupted on Thursday, with large crowds breaking through the border fence.

The Spanish government announced that it will send armed forces to assist the Civil Guard in “maintaining security in the city of Ceuta.” It also announced that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, along with Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will visit Ceuta on Friday.
“The situation is complete chaos,” Rachid Sbihi, head of the association representing Spanish Civil Guard officers guarding the border in Ceuta, told the news agency AP.
“It is impossible to give exact numbers, but thousands of migrants are crossing the border,” he said, adding that the border “has completely collapsed.”
Achraf Maimouni, a member of the Moroccan Human Rights Association in northern Morocco, described the situation as “exceptional.”
