On social networks, people were asking where the loud gunshots were coming from, and residents of Klaipėda wrote that they heard the sounds in various parts of the city. Some initially thought it was thunder, while others went outside to see what was happening.
Not all residents had noticed the previously announced information about the exercises, so the unexpected sounds caused concern.
“It can be heard very well. The whole house and windows on Vyturio Street are shaking,” wrote Kristina, a resident of Klaipėda, on social media.
According to the Klaipėda city municipality, the exercises are being conducted by soldiers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Infantry Brigade “Iron Wolf” General Romualdas Giedraitis Artillery Battalion.

“During the exercises, live firing will be conducted from the Brigade General Povilas Plechavičius training ground into the Baltic Sea. Artillery salvos will be heard during the day in the Klaipėda and Curonian Spit regions. The shooting is planned for September 15–18 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. There may also be a slight increase in military vehicle movement,” informed the Klaipėda city municipality.
The municipality reassures residents that the sounds heard are related to the pre-planned exercises of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
