Burned on the first day of winter

The fire in this former neat wooden apartment building on Birutės Street in Žvėrynas, Vilnius, broke out on the night of December 1, 2023. As later reported by the Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD), the fire report was received on the night of December 1 at 2:35 a.m.

“Upon arrival, the roof and staircase of the 2-story, 8-apartment building were burning with open flames. About 370 sq. m of the roof with the attic and one staircase burned down. Two apartments on the second floor were severely burned. All apartments were flooded with water.
After placing extension ladders from the 2nd floor, 3 people (2 adults and a child) were evacuated. Temporary accommodation was provided to 11 people,” the PAGD incident summary stated.

Immediately after the disaster, residents spoke about the help they needed and the hope that the city municipality would assist them in repairing the apartment building.

The Žvėrynas community also shared a post at that time stating that the building is included in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage, so it must be restored. And there will supposedly be an opportunity to use support under a new program for the restoration of historic buildings.
