“A sword-wielding attacker broke into the Brinellskolan school and injured several people,” said the Fagersta municipality, located northwest of the capital Stockholm, in a statement.

The municipality did not specify the number of injured but reported that the police are searching the school, and other schools in the area were closed.
It added that the attacker was detained by the police. The newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the person armed with a machete was shot in the leg by police officers.
Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad, quoted by the news agency TT, said the report was received early Friday afternoon, and the police rushed to the scene.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed regret over the serious incident in Fagersta, which occurred “immediately after the summer holidays,” in a message posted on the social network X.
“Reports of injured people have been received. We do not yet know what lies behind this act, but we know that the police are working very intensively,” he added. “Our thoughts are with all those affected.”

P. Vamstad said officers will investigate whether video camera footage could be useful in the investigation.
Public broadcaster SVT reported that ambulances, police cars, and a police helicopter were on duty near the school in the small town of about 12,000 inhabitants.
There have already been several high-profile attacks in educational institutions in Sweden.
In February 2025, a 35-year-old man killed 10 people at an adult education center in Örebro – the largest mass shooting in Sweden. Police indicated that the killer acted to end his own life due to financial and psychological difficulties.
In March 2022, an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed two teachers at a high school in the southern city of Malmö.
In October 2015, three people died in a racially motivated attack at a school in the western city of Trollhättan, carried out by a sword-wielding attacker who was shot dead by police.
