In Lithuania, the main tick species are considered to be the forest tick, the taiga tick, and the meadow tick. According to Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) professor Dr. Algimantas Paulauskas, humans are most often attacked by the first two, but the meadow tick can also bite.
Individual tick species common in Southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, the Balkans, Italy, or Spain may also be found in Lithuania. They are brought by migrating birds, but so far these ticks do not reproduce in our country and their entire development cycle does not take place here.
However, the professor pointed out that some tick species typical of warmer regions have already established themselves in Poland. This may increase the risk of new tick-borne disease pathogens entering Lithuania.
