“Why should Russia attack NATO, why? The Soviet Union recognized the independence of the Baltic states. And it withdrew peacefully. Why attack them now?” – A. Gruško said to the news agency “Interfax” on Tuesday in the corridors of the Eastern Economic Forum.
This was his reaction to European officials’ statements about possible Russian plans to attack a NATO member.
“There is no reason and no plans, absolutely none, to attack,” A. Gruško asserted.
Western and Baltic officials and intelligence services have warned that Moscow might consider taking military action against NATO countries. The Baltic states – Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia – joined the Alliance in 2004.

These statements came amid growing security concerns in the Baltic region after Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Baltic officials have repeatedly emphasized that Russia poses a long-term threat to the security of NATO’s eastern flank.
When asked whether European Union representatives had contacted Moscow to discuss their concerns, A. Gruško, according to “Interfax,” stated that “there is no real disposition or willingness on the European side that would be politically expressed as a political ambition.”
