Hoping to revive long-stalled efforts to end the fighting, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump discussed the war during an approximately hour-long phone call on Tuesday, which the Kremlin described as “very open” and constructive.
US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also visited Moscow and Kyiv last weekend, trying to jump-start long-stalled US efforts to end the fighting.
Several previous rounds of negotiations failed to bring the warring neighbors closer together.
Moscow demands that Ukraine hand over its still-controlled territory in the eastern Donetsk region and give up Western military support.
Kyiv says such conditions amount to capitulation and would only allow Russia to prepare for a new offensive aimed at forming a Moscow-friendly puppet government.
