This find was called one of the most significant underwater archaeology discoveries in recent years by Italy’s Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli. The shipwreck was found about five kilometers off the coast of Mazara del Vallo.
Members of the Palermo police cultural heritage protection department reported on Saturday that the ship, believed to have been built in the 2nd–1st century BC, was found at a depth of about 46 meters. Local fishermen reported the sunken ship.

“Visibility was not the best (…) I approached. And my heart stopped. A wide area of amphorae opened up beneath me,” G. De Mola wrote on the social network Instagram, adding a video from the discovery site.
According to local media, the ship is about 21 meters long and six meters wide. It mainly carried “Dressel 1A” type amphorae – tall cylindrical vessels most commonly used to transport wine.
