Lifeguards working in Neringa will remember this summer as very intense. According to the head of the lifeguards, Gintaras Kuprys, a thirty-year-old man drowned here while swimming during a red flag, and ten more people were rescued.

“Well, it wasn’t much of a summer. And the waves, currents, and the weather were like that… A lot of tension for both the lifeguards and everyone,” said G. Kuprys.
He recalled that two people drowned last year. G. Kuprys stated that for almost five summers in Nida or Juodkrantė, no one had drowned.
Meanwhile, Kajus Pirožnikas, deputy head of the Palanga lifeguard service, said they had to rescue only a few people. Unfortunately, one person who came from abroad drowned. The tragic accident happened in August – three young men were swimming near the bridge to the sea. They all started to drown. Both vacationers and lifeguards rushed to save them. Footage from the lifeguards’ operation spread quickly. Two teenagers were pulled out, one could not be saved.
“A somewhat sad summer specifically because of the weather. The weekdays were still quite good, but as soon as the weekend started, there were rains and cold weather. However, we had work and incidents,” said K. Pirožnikas.

This summer was calmer for Klaipėda lifeguards – not a single person drowned. Last year, the sea claimed two victims.
“The sea was more often rough than calm. Five people were rescued, and seven more had to be helped to swim back to shore. They did not drown but were unable to return,” said Aleksandras Siakki, head of Klaipėda lifeguards. However, according to him, there was no shortage of work on the shore: they had to look for lost children and provide first aid to vacationers who fell ill.
From the first of September, fewer lifeguards are on duty by the sea. In the Curonian Spit, they will finish work on September 7, and in Palanga and Klaipėda – in mid-September.
