The suspect, who is identified only as Serhiy P. under Polish privacy laws, allegedly attempted to kill a representative of the Ukrainian arms industry in Irpin, near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, news agencies reported.

“The investigation revealed that Serhiy P. placed an improvised explosive device under the car used by the potential victim,” the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) statement said.

According to the agency, the explosive device was designed to be detonated remotely by mobile phone, but it did not explode due to a malfunction.

Afterwards, the 63-year-old suspect fled to Poland, where he was arrested in Warsaw on August 5, ABW stated.

He has been charged with attempted murder using explosives and possession of explosives without the necessary permit.

According to prosecutors, if found guilty, he faces at least 15 years in prison or life imprisonment.
