„Novorossiysk – the end“: Russian companies refuse to set foot in the Black Sea

“Fesco” reported that it is working on additional security measures and exploring alternative delivery options. There are not many, and according to logistics experts, it will most likely end with another “traffic jam” at the Far East ports, writes the news portal “The Moscow Times.”

The ship “Janina,” which could carry about 1000 containers, sank on the night of August 1. A few days later, on the night of August 4, maritime drones attacked the cargo ship “Nadezhda,” sailing from Novorossiysk to Samsun, Turkey, carrying vegetables and fruits.

“As we feared, the route through Novorossiysk is finished,” said an importer of household chemicals and household goods from China.

According to him, “Fesco” was one of the largest Russian operators in this direction along with the “Delo” group of companies.

Representatives of the “Delo” group warned back in March, when the war in the Middle East began and the Strait of Hormuz was blocked, that the Far East ports could face an increase in cargo flows this year, similar to 2022, when all imports flooded this route.

Now Russian importers have even more reasons to transport goods to the Far East, considered an employee of a large logistics company.

But there is no other choice. “Stopping container transportation through Novorossiysk means that the main import flow will primarily go to the Far East ports and Saint Petersburg. There are also rail and road routes, but their volumes are still significantly lower, and Saint Petersburg is also not safe – first, the shortest route from China to it goes through the Strait of Hormuz, and you know how it is there; second, Saint Petersburg ports are attacked by drones,” said the publication’s interlocutor.

Due to attacks on ships in June–July, delivery times on this route have become unpredictable.

“We have been discouraging clients from using it for more than a month,” added another interlocutor.

So far, Ukrainian Armed Forces drones have mostly targeted dry cargo ships carrying grain and oil product tankers. Monitoring ship schedules shows that in July, the number of large ship voyages from Novorossiysk decreased by 38% compared to May, including oil tankers by 50%, grain bulk carriers by 46%.
