“The investigation into the drone that flew over Langenhagen Airport on Tuesday has been taken over by the Hanover Central Criminal Police Department,” a local police spokesperson told AFP.
The runways at the airport north of Hanover were closed for 90 minutes early Tuesday morning, after which the airport resumed its normal operations, an airport spokesperson told AFP.
According to the spokesperson, six flights were delayed between 15 and 50 minutes, including flights to Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and Spain. Additionally, a cargo plane flying from Paris was diverted to Nuremberg Airport.
The first report of the incident came from the weekly magazine “Der Spiegel.” The publication cited an internal police report stating that “the possibility of hybrid activity cannot be ruled out.”
The drone was not noticed by the relevant authorities or airport staff and flew freely for about two hours.

German authorities use the term “hybrid attack” to describe various incidents, including sabotage, espionage, and propaganda operations, the number of which has significantly increased since the start of the war in Ukraine and for which Russia is most often blamed.
According to the weekly, the police report concludes that “it is currently impossible” to link the drone incident in Hanover with the explosive drone found last week at Leipzig Airport.
After the incident in Leipzig, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned of a “new dimension of threat” and mentioned a possible “hybrid attack scenario,” but did not accuse any individual or specific country.
Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Germany has become Kyiv’s main military supporter in Europe.
