The score in the match against the Canadians was tied (17:17) with just a few seconds left, but K. Nacickaitė – Van Der Horst, who received the ball under the basket, provoked a foul with 1.8 seconds remaining and secured victory for the Lithuanians with two free throws, as the Canadians’ desperate last-second shot was off target.
K. Nacickaitė – Van Der Horst scored more than half of the team’s points – 10.
The Canadian team won bronze at the last World Championship and is ranked fifth in the world rankings. Lithuania is ranked 18th.
The Lithuanians will play their second match today, June 2nd, at 15:35 against France. On Thursday, the Lithuanians will face off against Ukraine and Japan.
A total of 20 teams are playing in the tournament, divided into four groups of five teams each. Teams finishing first in their groups will advance directly to the quarterfinals, teams finishing 2nd-3rd will play in the round of 16, and teams finishing 4th-5th will end their participation.
The Lithuanian women’s 3×3 team is participating in the world championships for the third time but has not yet won any World Championship medals. Their highest place, fourth, was achieved in 2022 in Antwerp.
Soon after, the Lithuanian men’s 3×3 basketball team will start the tournament. Today, they face Belgium (14:20) and Brazil (16:35).
