A catamaran-type ferry sailed from Kyrenia, also known as Girne, a port in the internationally unrecognized northern ethnically divided part of Cyprus, to the port of Taşucu in Turkey’s Mersin province.

Turkey’s state television channel TRT reports that water began to rush into the ferry a few kilometers from the shore.
North Cyprus Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı told TRT that the ship capsized and rescue teams are already working at the scene of the accident.

Several companies operate on the busy route between Kyrenia and Taşucu, carrying passengers. It is not yet known which company owned the capsized ferry.
Footage filmed at the scene of the accident shows people wearing life jackets floating in the water around the capsized ship, reports the news agency Associated Press.
