This new vaccine together with Merck’s drug Keytruda has shown a “statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement” in patients with skin cancer, according to a joint company statement.
Unlike conventional vaccines, the new vaccine does not prevent the disease but treats it by training the body’s immune system to fight the tumor.
“This is the first positive Phase 3 trial result related to personalized neoantigen therapy (INT) and mRNA-based cancer treatment,” the company said.
It did not provide specific details of the trial results, nor did it indicate when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) might make a decision on vaccine approval.
Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. In 2022, more than 330,000 new cases of this cancer were diagnosed worldwide, the company said.
