Long-time director of Šiauliai Drama Theatre Regina Steponavičiūtė has died

R. Steponavičiūtė, born in Šiauliai, worked as a director at the Šiauliai Drama Theatre from 1972 to 2011. Over nearly four decades, she created more than 30 performances, many of which became a significant part of the theatre’s repertoire and remained in the audience’s memory.

The director’s work was distinguished by precision, subtlety, and sensitivity to people and literary works. Her performances focused heavily on the human inner world and psychology, and her directing was characterized by clear thought and a restrained artistic form.

Among R. Steponavičiūtė’s most prominent works are Hermann Sudermann’s “Jonas ir Erdmė”, Ričardas Gavelis’ “Sūkuriai”, Henrikas Gulbis’ “Vyturėliai”, Tennessee Williams’ “The Rose Tattoo”, Eugene O’Neill’s “Desire Under the Elms”, Jean Cocteau’s “Les Parents terribles”, Žemaitė’s “Dėdės ir dėdienės” and “Pragiedruliai”, John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”, Sholom Aleichem’s “Tevye the Dairyman”, Erich Maria Remarque’s “Three Comrades”, Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias” and many others.

Plays for children also held an important place in the director’s work. Among the most memorable are Maurice Maeterlinck’s “The Blue Bird” and Sofija Čiurlionienė-Kymantaitė’s “Dvylika brolių, juodvarniais lakstančių”.

“Regina Steponavičiūtė belonged to a generation of creators who shaped and nurtured the tradition of the Šiauliai Theatre for decades. Generations of actors grew up in her performances, and her work will remain in the memory of the theatre community and audiences as a significant part of the history of the Šiauliai State Drama Theatre,” the theatre’s statement said.

The theatre expressed its condolences to R. Steponavičiūtė’s relatives, friends, colleagues, and the entire theatre community.

The Šiauliai State Drama Theatre will announce the time and place of the farewell to the director in the near future.
