Long-time director of Mažeikiai Gymnasium died

„After a serious illness, Mirdza Žiaurienė (1948–2026), the long-time head of the school and chemistry teacher, passed away into eternity in her 78th year of life. She passed away at a special time – as the restored gymnasium approached its 30th anniversary, and as the 100th class of graduates was sent off into life… It is symbolic and important – the director’s entire life was the school and an endless belief in children.

M. Žiaurienė led Merkelis Račkauskas Gymnasium from 1984 (then Mažeikiai 1st Secondary School) until 2009. This was a historical period of the school’s growth and transformation. Director M. Žiaurienė’s managerial talent, energy, and clear vision led to our educational institution – the first in Telšiai County – being granted gymnasium status in 1996.

The director nurtured more than one generation of Mažeikiai residents, gathered a strong, creative team of teachers, and created solid traditions that are alive to this day. In the memory of colleagues and students, Mirdza Žiaurienė will remain as a demanding but exceptionally fair leader, distinguished by strategic thinking and deep human wisdom,” reads the gymnasium’s Facebook page.
