On Friday, officers of the VSAT Coastal Border Guard Unit’s Port Border Guard at the Klaipėda State Seaport inspected an “Opel Vivaro” vehicle brought by ferry from Sweden.

The vehicle, marked with Latvian state license plates, was driven by a 55-year-old Latvian citizen, accompanied by a 54-year-old compatriot.

The neighbors were transporting a “BMW R 1250 GS” motorcycle by minibus.

Routine document checks are not conducted on internal Schengen routes, but border guards, based on risk assessment, have the right to selectively check any passenger or vehicle.

The motorcycle transported by minibus, which had no license plates, aroused suspicion among the officers.

After checking databases, it was found that this vehicle had been declared wanted by Swedish law enforcement officers just a day earlier.

Due to the acquisition or disposal of property obtained by criminal means, officers of the VSAT Criminal Investigations Department’s Pre-trial Investigation Division have initiated a pre-trial investigation, led by a prosecutor from the Klaipėda District Prosecutor’s Office of the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office. For such a criminal act, the Latvians face a fine or imprisonment of up to four years.

After questioning, the detainees were released, with preventive measures imposed – confiscation of documents and an obligation to periodically register at the police station.

The car and motorcycle are temporarily held at the Coastal Border Guard Unit.
