During Lithuania’s year-long presidency, the main focus will be on strengthening linguistic and cultural diversity in European schools.
It is also planned to share Lithuania’s good experience in the field of artificial intelligence application, and to strengthen educational support and inclusion in the European schools network.
Moreover, during various presidency events and conferences for teachers, efforts will be made to increase the visibility of the European school system.
Earlier in June, at the official event of the Latvian presidency handover to Lithuania, the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Raminta Popovienė stated that Vilnius accepts the presidency of European schools as an important commitment to contribute to the strengthening and development of a unique education system.
“European schools have existed for more than 70 years, and I hope that during Lithuania’s presidency they will only strengthen and carry out their mission even more firmly to provide high-quality multilingual, multicultural, and inclusive education in a rapidly changing world,” R. Popovienė said.
European schools are educational institutions managed by EU member states, ensuring multilingual and multicultural education. The European schools system consists of 37 schools from 15 EU countries, with about 400 Lithuanians studying there.

European schools were established so that children of employees working in EU institutions could receive quality education in their native language. This allows these children to smoothly continue their studies or return to their home country’s education system at any stage of education.
The European school consists of three levels: preschool education, primary education, and secondary education. A student graduating from a European school receives a European Baccalaureate diploma, equivalent to the Lithuanian secondary school leaving certificate.
This mission will be implemented by the Ministry of Education together with partners – Vytautas Magnus University and Vilnius Lithuanian House.
Part of the presidency period will also coincide with the upcoming Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council, starting in January 2027.
