„He is our Olympian, a medalist to me. What happened after that does not matter to me. He was a person I was very proud of,“ L. Kasčiūnas told BNS on Thursday evening.

„Very friendly, always smiling, truly a great colleague. My deepest sincere condolences to the relatives, especially the family, a cruel tragedy. Strength and eternal rest to him. I also sympathize with the Liberal Movement colleagues,“ said the parliamentarian.
The Seimas liberal, former canoeist J. Šuklinas died at the age of 41.
According to L. Kasčiūnas, the deceased also cared about support for Ukraine and represented Visaginas’ interests in the Seimas.
„He tried hard to ensure Visaginas was not forgotten, as a single-member district representative I give him great respect for how he worked for his people,“ said L. Kasčiūnas.
J. Šuklinas began his political career in 2014 in the Visaginas municipal council, where he worked for a decade, and in 2023 he temporarily served as the mayor of Visaginas.
J. Šuklinas belonged to the Liberal Movement since 2022 and was elected to the Seimas in 2024.
J. Šuklinas was born in 1985 in Glazov, Russia, and held a master’s degree in public administration.
The deceased has repeatedly won prize places in world rowing championships and participated in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
