The Ukrainian, ranked 15th in the WTA rankings, is still undefeated this clay season – she has won 17 consecutive matches.
This day is historic for Ukrainian tennis. It was the first time that two tennis players from this country played in the quarterfinals of a “Grand Slam” tournament.
“I want to start by saying that today Elina and I played a historic match. And again, we had a very difficult night in Ukraine, especially in Kyiv. Many people died. I want to dedicate this match to all our compatriots and their resilience. I also want to thank Elina and highlight her huge impact on Ukrainian tennis. She is simply an incredible fighter. I am very happy to be in the semifinals, but first of all, I want to thank her for this wonderful match,” said the winner of the match.
23-year-old M. Kostyuk became the first representative of her country to reach the semifinals of “Roland Garros”.

Although E. Svitolina is the most titled Ukrainian tennis player, she has now lost all six “French Open” quarterfinals she has played. This is the only “Grand Slam” tournament whose semifinals the 31-year-old tennis player has not yet reached.
Besides these two tennis players, another Ukrainian – Dayana Yastremska (WTA-45) – has played in the “Grand Slam” semifinals, achieving this in Australia in 2024.
M. Kostyuk will face the tennis player from the occupying country, Mirra Andreeva (WTA-8), in the semifinals. The Russian crushed Sorana Cirstea (WTA-18) from Romania 6:0, 6:3 in the other quarterfinal.
The Ukrainian tennis star has so far won both head-to-head matches against the 19-year-old Russian, including the WTA 1000 tournament final in Madrid.
