Sunday’s elections were called after the main political parties failed to agree by the March deadline on who should replace former President Vjosa Osmani. After the first elections in February 2025, the country remained without a functioning government for most of last year, leading to a second election in December.

The protracted crisis has negatively affected Kosovo’s economy, which was already severely hit by the global energy crisis and rising fuel prices. One of Europe’s youngest and poorest countries declared independence from Serbia in 2008, after the 1998–1999 war, which ended with NATO bombing forcing Serbia to withdraw its forces.
