In the first half of the year, the largest cargo group – containerized cargo – grew steadily in Klaipėda Port. 7.2 million tons of them were handled in the first 6 months of this year. This is 12 percent more than in the same period last year.

Assessing the handling of standardized containers (TEU), Klaipėda Port started the second half of the year having reached almost 700 thousand TEU. The growth of container handling in Klaipėda Port was determined by increasing volumes of maritime transit, involvement in a new oceanic line connecting Klaipėda with Asia, as well as the development of short sea shipping lines and long-term and consistent investments in port infrastructure.
A positive result is also recorded in the ro-ro cargo or ferry-transported freight vehicle segment – the flow of these cargoes has already reached almost 3.4 million tons and exceeds last year’s result by 4 percent.
Growth is also recorded when evaluating freight vehicles that traveled through Klaipėda Port in units – 173,505 vehicles were transported, while last year during the same period this number reached 169,280.
It is recorded that in the first half of the year, ro-ro cargo was transported more intensively than last year in the directions of Germany and Sweden.
The curves of oil product handling are also steadily rising – 2.3 million tons of cargo have already been handled. This is 12 percent or 242 thousand tons more than in the same period last year. Growth in the export direction is recorded in this cargo segment.

One of the most significant jumps in handling is in the liquefied natural gas segment. Last year’s first half-year result improved by 37 percent, and almost 1.6 million tons of liquefied natural gas were handled. This result was influenced by the opening of the Ukrainian direction and stable demand in the region.
Fertilizer handling is approaching the 1 million mark – 894 thousand tons have already been handled. This is 14 percent or 112 thousand tons more than in the same period last year. The handling of vegetable fats and oils grew by 58 percent in the first half of this year, reaching 294 thousand tons. The amount of scrap metal cargo in Klaipėda Port this half-year was equal to last year’s volume – 565 thousand tons were handled.
The resilience of Klaipėda Port to market changes is also strengthened by the ship repair and construction industry developed here. In the first half of this year, a positive result was also recorded in this segment: 46 ships were repaired and modernized, which is 31 percent more than in January–June last year.
Almost 1.3 million tons of grain have already been handled in the first half of this year. So far, this is a slightly more modest result than in the same period last year, when 1.4 million tons of grain were handled. 153 thousand tons less wood has been handled this year so far.
