According to Vytautas Žalimas, head of the LTG group company “LTG Infra,” this infrastructure will enable passengers to be transported to Varėna by new battery trains, which means even more sustainable train journeys.

“Battery trains will allow passengers to reach areas far from the contact network. The charging station being installed in Varėna will provide trains with the opportunity to quickly charge the battery and continue the journey on a non-electrified section to the installed contact network. It is also important that battery charging will take place during passenger boarding, disembarking, and train preparation for the trip, so the travel time itself will not change,” says V. Žalimas.
The maximum charging power of a single train at the stations installed in Varėna will reach 2–2.5 MW. The station will be connected to a 10 kV medium voltage distribution network, and the main equipment will be installed in standard 12-meter-long sea containers.
Train batteries will be charged via pantograph using a special short contact structure. Depending on the battery discharge level, charging will last up to 45 minutes.

This infrastructure is being prepared for new battery trains planned to be operated by the LTG group company “LTG Link.” Battery trains will be able to run on both electrified and non-electrified railway sections, thus expanding the possibilities of more sustainable rail transport in Lithuania. Currently, it is planned to install one charging station in Varėna, but future expansion to other Lithuanian cities with additional charging locations is anticipated.
The charging station is planned to be completed by the end of 2026, with a value of 3.2 million euros.
